Brooke (An Astrological Herbal for Women, Crossing Pr., 1995) relates the basic aspects of the practice of modern witchcraft?wicca. She covers the areas of ritual, history, festivals, ethics, divination, herbs, goddess lore, and psychic development. Her divination focuses on the use of tarot. The information she presents is thoroughly researched and well written; the bibliography is comprehensive. The rituals and meditations are quite excellent. The history of wicca and witchcraft, however, is not a straightforward one, and Brooke delineates nicely the differences between her opinions and controversy. She does not cover in this volume the role of men in wicca, and her book is not a definitive guide to modern witchcraft but the reflections of a practitioner.
