Reviews

Grade 6 Up The title of this two-volume set is somewhat of a misnomer in that the greatest number of the over 700 poems included here were not written for children nor are they about the concerns of children (the section on "Love" for example contains almost exclusively poems about romantic love). Instead this anthology contains a classic collection of poems with which a literate adult in our society should have become familiar through late childhood, adolescence, and adulthood. The poems are arranged into nine broad categories including "Sorrow and Consolation," "Higher Life," "Nature," "Fancy and Sentiment," "Descriptive Narrative," "National Spirit," and "Tragedy and Humor." The poems are attractively laid-out with no more than one poem per page. Gentle bordered black-and-white drawings are included on the introductory page of each category and appear occasionally throughout the anthology. Additional access to the poems is provided by an index to poets, titles, and first lines. This anthology would be most useful as a reference work for young adult or adult collections. Teachers and librarians wishing to introduce young people to classic poems in the context of other subjects of study would find the arrangement useful, as would librarians needing quick access to the texts of frequently sought poetic works.
