Synopsis
On two groups of works by the CoBrA legend A cofounder of the CoBrA movement, Dutch artist Karel Appel (1921–2006) produced a turbulent oeuvre of expressive figuration. This book focuses on two work his "object paintings," raw and colorful sculptures made from the 1940s to the ’90s, and his late nude paintings and drawings created between 1985 and 1995.

The color reproductions in this overscale picture book vary enormously in quality. Nonetheless, Karel Appel succeeds in conveying the explosive energy of this contemporary Dutch artist's work in a staggering variety of media. Divided by medium, each section contains a mini-survey of his creations over the last 35 years. The essays, while neither scholarly nor comprehensive, are clearly written and provide a context for his street art and some more personal biographical information. A chronology, list of exhibitions and collections, bibliography, and index are useful additions. While not an essential purchase, this book can be recommended for the general reader.
