Book by Sanders, Jonathan

This is the latest addition to a growing collection of photograph albums of Russia's early 20th-century history. Others include Marvin Lyons's Nicholas II: The Last Tsar (London: 1974) and Chloe Obolensky's The Russian Empire: A Portrait in Photographs (LJ 1/80). Whereas the earlier books drew upon emigre collections, this volume is derived mostly from photos in Soviet archives. They record the revolutionary year month by month, from the old--a wealthy woman selecting her New Year's tree--to the new--a group of Soviet soldiers marching off under the banner of communism. Sanders has written a lengthy historical introduction to this product of glasnost, which provides the raw material of that momentous year in Russia's history. For academic and larger public libraries.
