A chronicle story of the enduring serenity and strength of an English country town as it adjusts to the hardships of World War II

Miss Read is actually Mrs. Dora Saint, whose novels draw on her own memories of living and teaching in a small English village. She and her husband, a retired schoolmaster, have one daughter.
The sense of history here is that of common people living in small town England. There are no extravagances with Miss Read, just the sadnesses and pleasures of living. The story tells of three generations of two interwoven families, the Norths and the Howards, and of WWII. Wonderfully detailed, THE HOWARDS OF CAXLEY, brings the listener back to more sensible times, quieter times, more thoughtful times. June Barrie does a charming and memorable job with the people and plots in this gentle narration. The characters are marvelous--this listener would enjoy knowing both these families. As an escape from the violence and confusion of the 21st century, this is a delightful listen. B.H.B. © AudioFile 2004, Portland, Maine-- Copyright © AudioFile, Portland, Maine
