Campaign Ribbons is a graphic, sometimes humorous, account of British warfare between 1939 and 1945 from the perspective of a very young, very junior reserve officer. John Simmons was a purser who spent the first half of Word War II on "dicey assignments" in merchant ships. He was aboard the graceful and elegantly fitted "Empress of Australia" on her last peacetime trip in late August 1939, just days before England and France declared war on Germany on September 3rd. With his once glamorous ship docked at the Royal Naval base at Portsmouth, being painted battleship gray and having guns mounted, Simmons signed on for naval support service. Simmons describes his naval service through four assault landings, lonely Atlantic patrols in ill-equipped ships, and aboard a U. S. -built aircraft carrier -- unglamorous tasks in the massive effort to bring victory. Campaign Ribbons recalls the fears and hopes of a generation of young men and women caught up in a conflict that challenged and threatened the foundations of the world they had long believed in. Campaign Ribbons is an invaluable contribution to World War II naval histories. -- Midwest Book Review
