David M. Key, Jr., was born in Antwerp, Belgium, the second son of a diplomatic/military oriented family. He grew up in Berlin, London, Washington, D.C., and Ottawa, Canada.
Key was educated at Groton School, 1939-1945, and received an A.B. in English from Harvard College in 1949. He was about to enter the Class of 1950 at the U.S. Naval Academy, but was advised by his grandfather, Commodore Albert Key, that the present peace would deprive the U.S. Navy of funds and result in slow promotions. Key was subsequently drafted in the U.S. Army in 1950 and served as a Private First Class with occupational forces in Bavaria, Germany, traveling to Austria, Italy, and France.
Following his Army discharge in 1952, David Key worked with AMEX and NYSE listed companies, such as Servo Corporation of America, Howmet Corporation, Pechiney, Beech Aircraft, and Banco Popular de Puerto Rico, in marketing guidance, internal communications, advertising, and financial public relations. In 1969, Key obtained an M.B.A. degree in marketing from New York University School of Business.
