About the Author

RUSSELL H. POWELL is the head librarian of the Engineering Library at the University of Kentucky, Lexington. In 1966, he graduated from the University of Pittsburgh's library school with a specialization in scientific bibliography. After serving as science librarian at Juniata College in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania, he moved to the University of Kentucky, where he has been for the past 25 years. During this time, he has written and edited several books, including Core List of Books and Journals in Science and Technology, coedited with James R. Powell and Handbooks and Tables in Science and Technology also published by Oryx Press.

This third edition of a well-known bibliography last published in 1983 contains 3,662 handbooks and tables in the fields of science, technology, and medicine. As in previous editions, coverage is limited to books containing hard data that can be used to answer reference questions. Many government publications and research reports that would be hard to find elsewhere are listed. Popular works are excluded. Almost 400 outdated titles have been dropped from this edition and 650 new ones added. Powell is head librarian of the University of Kentucky Engineering Library. He is a scientific-literature subject specialist and has written several books on the subject.

The bibliography is arranged alphabetically by title. All entries have a complete bibliographic citation. In addition, most include the Library of Congress card number and price. The majority of entries have annotations that vary in length from one line to a paragraph. Within the annotations are frequent references to other titles in the book. No books published later than 1992 appear to be listed, and superseded editions of some titles are included. For example, the CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics is published annually, yet the 1991 edition is listed. The fourth edition (1973) of the Merck Veterinary Manual is listed; the most recent one available is the seventh edition (1991). Assisting users are two indexes, author-editor and subject.

This unique publication can be a useful collection- development tool, although users will need to check the availability of later editions. Academic, public, and special libraries with interests in this subject should give consideration to this new edition.
