CHRISTINE M. BLACK, a political reporter wh the Boston Globe for over 25 years, has covered five presidential and dozens of state and local campaigns over the course of two decades. She coauthored, with Thomas Oliphant, All By Myself: The Unmaking of a Presidential Campaign, published in 1989, which provided an in-depth analysis of the Dukakis campaign. Previously, Ms. Black was Washington correspondent for the Boston Herald American and the Lowell Sun.
Gr. 7-12. Focusing on the 1992 presidential campaign, which was significant because a new generation came to power, Black explains the inner workings of a political campaign and how campaigns relate to actual governing. After a look at Clinton's inauguration and the first events of his presidency, she turns to the campaign process, discussing funding, caucuses, the primaries, the convention, the significance of the vice president, the various ways candidates get their message to the voters, and Election Day itself. She also looks at candidates who left their mark on the campaign (including Tsongas, Perot, and Buchanan) and provides insight into why Clinton defeated Bush. By organizing the material into small sections, Black enables readers to focus more easily. Beneficial reading for young people who may not grasp the implications of the political process. A list of recommended readings is appended. Patricia Braun
