From School Library Journal

Grade 2-4-- These two morality stories are based on tales ascribed to Buddha some 2,000 years ago. The illustrations use bold and bright colors--sometimes to excess, as when the sailors have green and blue hair. The designs and motifs convey a feeling of another culture, but the characters have pinkish flesh and blue eyes. The tales are also unevenly told. While The Power of a Promise is a traditional tale and easy to understand (the prince tames a wild beast through his honesty and goodness), Courageous Captain is disconnected and confusing. Here a wise but ailing old captain agrees to help an inexperienced crew find riches and ends up saving them from certain death through prayers answered because of his goodness and pure action. This tale raises more questions than it answers. There is no explanation as to why the crew is unable to get control of their ship, why the captain rewards them with riches when they disobey his requests, etc. Stick with collections of these tales unless there is a great need for illustrated Jataka tales for a young audience. --Regina Pauly, Free Library of Philadelphia
