Synopsis

Possibly the oldest religious practitioners in human history, shamans continue to act as the religious leaders in many societies today. They perform mysterious rituals in which they are said to converse with gods and spirits, heal the sick with supernatural powers, and even visit the spirit world. Although often treated with skepticism by "modern" or more "civilized" people, shamans perform vital and mysterious functions for their communities. Whether shamans possess real power or simply an uncanny ability to convince their audience they do remains an unsolved mystery. This book is written for the curious…those who enjoy the hunt for solutions to the unexplained. It offers an introduction to the intriguing theories of experts. But, like any good mystery, the unraveling ultimately relies on the limits of the reader's imagination.

Reviews

Grade 6 Up-- Stein describes some of the past and present variations of Shamanism around the world. She shows how shamans function as healers, intermediates, and conductors of souls, and often appear to have the power to leave this world and travel into other spirit worlds. The text discusses their use of trances and journeys and whether they are real or dreamed, as well as training and the initiation process. The author draws on scientists and other experts for varied opinions and explanations, ending with a chapter on the religion's role in the modern world and relating it to people's efforts to release spiritual power within themselves. Quotations from shamans, believers, and nonbelievers offer various viewpoints. Overall, this is a clearly written, informative presentation of a subject that has not been widely explored for young people. It is illustrated with informative drawings and black-and-white photographs with good descriptive captions, and has a list of adult and academic books for further reading. --Jane Gardner Connor, formerly at South Carolina State Library, Columbia
