Reviews

Grade 10-12-- A balanced look at topical discussions with differing viewpoints from opposing (and some times controversial) authorities. Male/Female Roles is sure to produce the most intense debate among students. It is well researched, interesting, and will not become outdated quickly. (Librarians will want to see the section on "low pay for traditional women's work.") The Superpowers discusses arms control, underlying philosophies of the countries, and the possibility of economic cooperation. Richard Nixon argues that the Cold War is not yet over; George Bush argues that U. S. intervention in South America is just. Equally convincing arguments are made for opposing positions. The Third World addresses the causes of poverty and use of U. S. foreign aid in developing countries. Although most of the essays present arguments addressing economic matters, there is a fascinating chapter on the subject of human rights violations. All three volumes have excellent bibliographies and lists of the appropriate organizations (with phone numbers). --Dorothy J. Coakley, San Francisco Public Library
