Grade 9-12-- This Australian import looks at six world theologies--Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Confucianism--as well as Aboriginal religions. The authors outline the historical development of each, including the evolution of texts and traditions, and the ethical positions they espouse. They discuss contemporary issues such as the role of women, the environment, and abortion. Where there is no stated position, the authors extrapolate from the religion's tenets. For example, Islam has no guidelines on the environment, but based on its belief that the world is a transitional phase of life on the way to Paradise, the authors conclude that ecological issues are not likely to be given great importance. Where there is not a single clear position, they outline various viewpoints. The book concludes with six statements delineating how religions vary in focus and approach. The volume is clearly written, but the subject matter is abstract, making for somewhat demanding reading. Its usefulness will be mostly for students of comparative religion. --Jane Gardner Connor, formerly at South Carolina State Library, Columbia
