The author's account of his childhood in Shanghai during World War II and its aftermath

"Head of a dragon, tail of a fish" is a Chinese proverb most aptly describing this autobiography: it promises to be interesting, but peters out into the humdrum. Set in Shanghai during 1940-50, the tumultuous backdrop of Japanese occupation, Kuomintang resurgence, and ultimate Communist triumph, Patent's story is curiously detached from its surroundings. Despite what promises to be an absorbing family background of mixed Jewish ancestry (Russian and Iraqui), this is a dull chronicle of an ordinary everyday life. As it deals with Patent's first 11 years, memory is bolstered by lots of fictionalized dialogue, which cannot vivify his rather cardboard playmates. The Chinese barely figure in the narrative at all, partially due to the reprehensible social mores of the time. Patent is no Jean Fritz or Pearl Buck, and never breaks out of a very narrow circle. Neither the events of his childhood nor their presentation will involve children for very long. Doubtless, this is of interest as family history; outside of immediate family, a better bet is Jean Fritz's China Homecoming (1985) or Homesick: My Own Story (1982, both Putnam)--one a return memoir, the other a fictionalized childhood (based on fact), both absorbing. --John Philbrook, San Francisco Public Library
