And through the rest of this story, Emily leads mother through the day in a mischievous game of hide-and-seek. Hines' story will keep readers and listeners giggling and laughing at Emily's antics and mother's patience. The text is full of rhymes and rhythms that will delight children. Hines has added to her story with fine line illustrations filled in with creamy pastel colors on white backgrounds that exhibit the familiar items and environment of a normal preschool child's world. Just as in her Daddy Makes the Best Spaghetti (Clarion, 1986), Hines portrays a loving family and home which should be comforting to small children. As she did in Daddy Makes the Best Spaghetti and other books, Hines manages here to convey the homely coziness of everyday family life, even a small family, like Emily and her mother, and the special closeness between the two of them is most apparent. Because Emily looks younger than three and the eloquent text is quite simple, this book is probably more suitable to children on the lower end of the age range. Ages 3-6.
