This revisionist study attempts to shatter numerous "myths" about the British invasion of rock 'n' roll in America during the 1950s and 1960s. Some will find the conclusions arguable. For instance, the first myth bashed is that "the 'Beatle haircut' was responsible for U.S. males wearing long hair," the proof being that others wore long hair before the Beatles did, including John F. Kennedy's son, California surfers, and Beaver Cleaver. Along similar lines of reasoning, an entire chapter is devoted to discrediting the Beatles famous lyric "Yeah, Yeah, Yeah," based on the prior appearance of the same line in 144 songs (all listed in the appendix). The impact and influence of the British invasion is refuted with an endless mire of discussions about relative positions on the record charts. The book's iconoclasm may be refreshing to some, but the definitive works continue to be Nicholas Schaffner's The British Invasion ( LJ 8/82) and Philip Norman's Shout! The Beatles in Their Generation ( LJ 7/81). A marginal purchase for general collections.
