Reviews

That's a grand title for a primer that delivers less than promised. Aiming at readers who know the Soviet Union only as the "evil empire," the author assures them that the soul of Orthodox Russia is intact and that multiple religions are on the rise in the Soviet Union. Rambling sections intersperse current data with personal anecdotes and snippets of history. A tenth of the book is an earnest analysis of Father and Sons, apparently to show the resemblance between Turgenev's 1860s humanism and the 1980s Gorbachev model. Eliason's joy in the spiritual energy of perestroika is infectious, but scholars will be irritated at the way the author skips over hard questions--among others, the relation of Orthodox church and state, the effects of the proliferation of religions and sects on already contentious peoples, and what revival of patriarchal beliefs means for women.
