Quest for Freedom is a ponderous and diffuse attempt to put the collapse of the Soviet Union and its client states of Eastern Europe into a framework that incorporates the interplay of politics and economics. What emerges is a polemic against both the bureaucratic centralism that preceded the fall of the Soviet Union and the commercial statism that follows it. The book is unsuccessfull, however, drawing almost exclusively from the New York Times , infrequently from scholarly works or monographs or recently published books, and rarely offering any theoretical or analytical sophistication. Someone interested in political economy would be well advised to read Adam Przeworski's Democracy and the Market (Cambridge Univ. Pr., 1991) or Charles Lindblom's classic Politics and Markets ( LJ 12/1/77). The paucity of Krooth and Vladimirovitz's scholarship is compounded by the spotty index. Not recommended.
