The first piece of real estate owned by pitcher Eddie Neville occupied most of a city block in Durham, N.C.: he was the master of Durham Athletic Park, a baseball arena whose unusual dimensions tortured batters from the right side, then teased left-handed swingers when they faced Neville and other southpaws. He was a little guy swallowed up by a loose-fitting flannel uniform, but a fan favorite who dominated the Carolina League for an entire season and went on to become the winningest pitcher in the history of the Durham Bulls.
A product of the Baltimore sandlots, Neville was the kind of local hero who made baseball so popular for fans of the 1940s and 1950s. His story is one of Class D pennant races in Tarboro, N.C., winter baseball in the Canal Zone and Panama, and 16-inning marathons with the Toledo Mud Hens, all the while chasing the elusive dream of playing in the big leagues.
