Over 4,250 features are in this comprehensive filmography, including 61 documentaries of feature length and 44 of what were called "race movies," i.e., those with an all-black cast. For each: title, studio, year of production and release, cast and credits, production personnel, and a brief plot synopsis. Where applicable: Academy Award winners and nominees, other awards, and for performers, film debuts and final screen appearances. Alternate titles are cross-referenced.

About the Author:
The late Alan G. Fetrow lived in York, Pennsylvania. He was also the author of Feature Films, 1950-1959 (1999, paperback 2008) and Sound Films, 1927-1939 (1992).
From Library Journal:
A continuation of the author's Sound Films, 1927-1939: A United States Film-ography (McFarland, 1992), this book documents 4,296 feature-length American films produced or released in the Forties. The alphabetically arranged listings provide title and any alternate titles; studio; date; credits of cast, director, producer, and writers; source material; running time; availability on home video or laser disc; and a brief synopsis and notes. Where applicable, mention is made of Oscar-winning or -nominated performances, debuts and final performances, rankings on various "Best Films" lists, and whether the film has been computer-colorized. A short bibliography and a 220-page index of all personal names complete the volume. Fetrow's information is accurate, concise, and reasonably complete, although the decision to include character names for only selected titles is puzzling. Libraries that already have Jay R. Nash and Stanley R. Ross's Motion Picture Guide (12 vols., LJ 8/85) will find almost no new information here, as that book consistently supplies character names and offers slightly longer plot synopses. Libraries that plan to purchase the American Film Institute (AFI) catalog volumes covering the 1940s (scheduled to appear in late 1996) may also pass on this. Recommended for libraries that can't afford Nash and Ross's Motion Picture Guide or the AFI catalogs.
