From an enjoyable farm life in their beloved homeland, Rod and Ellie's call, courage, and compassion set them in the middle of a tangled political morass. They found themselves facing enemy bullets, land mines, MiG bombers, hippo herds and cobras, and saw human suffering beyond description in a poor country torn by Communist takeover and civil war. The Hein's heroic resistance to wrong, their tactful strategy, and most importantly, their daily obedience to divine direction, literally helped move a nation baptized in blood to the Peace Accord, Rome, 1992, ending a 16-year war. Whether on secret flights in Rodney's Piper Aztec, or walking many dusty miles to reach the unreached, or going on dangerous wartime missions and world-media appearances, they desired neither credit nor recognition, only souls. They are reaping abundantly of both. Their gospel, preached in word and deed, brought a key political leader, a general, and other high officials to embrace the Cross, as well as multitudes in army camps, the bush and villages, where the noble young family - minus one - continues planting and harvesting in a better Mozambique. Includes 16 PAGES OF COLOR PHOTOGRAPHS.

About the Author:
Rod & Ellie Hein - Born and raised in Zimbabwe, Pioneer Missionaries to Mozambique since 1982. In the midst of a fierce civil war, Rod & Ellie responded to the cries of the Mozambican people, (Acts 16:9) "And a vision appeared to Paul in the night; There stood a man of Macedonia, and prayed him, saying, Come over into Macedonia, and help us." While carrying the gospel to far off villages along bush paths and across rivers, Rod & Ellie saw the agony of people living and dying in the midst of war and famine. Tiny bush churches were pastored by men who had no bibles and very little knowledge of the Word. The couple determined in their hearts to build a Bible School where Mozambican leaders could be trained in the Word of God and be released to affect their nation for God. The Heins founded Afrika wa Yesu (Afrika for Jesus) ministry and established a Bible School in the remote Inhaminga region of Central Mozambique. Working together with a powerful team of Mozambican and International missionaries, they are reaching souls through evangelism, church planting and raising up Mozambican pastors and missionaries. A second Bible School has been established in Nacala, a largely Muslim region of Northern Mozambique. Afrika wa Yesu is a team-focused ministry and while the Bible Schools remain the main emphasis, the ministry also runs a dental clinic and is establishing a Vocational Training School to equip and train young men in basic work skills.
Review:
ELLIE AND RODNEY HEIN LIGHT IN THE DARK DAYS OF TYRANNY When I look back on my 40 years in Mozambique from the time I arrived as a little boy of 8 until my entire extended family and I were stripped of all we had and forced out by the foreign-incubated communist revolution in 1975 many events and people pour into my mind but few with such clarity and honour as the missionary couple, Ellie and Rodney Hein. I met the Hein s in 1991 in Malawi and in Mozambique and I am a personal witness to their exemplary life of courage and dedication in the face of evil. Their remarkable book, BEYOND THE SHADOW, published in 2000 by Christ For The Nations Inc. in Dallas, Texas, gives a lucid and detailed account of their exceptional life over many decades concerning Mozambique and surrounding countries where they faced tyranny, terror, suffering and despair among the vulnerable rural populations and in the refugee camps in neighbouring Malawi where Mozambicans had fled. As unrest turned into terror and ordinary civilians of all communities began to bear the brunt of an insurgency fuelled from outside and embodied in the FRELIMO guerrilla movement of the day, the Hein couple increased their efforts to try to bring help to the rural Mozambicans. Rodney, a skilled bush pilot, helped bring in medical supplies and other necessities from outside Mozambique. He and his wife gave hope where there was despair as they ran rudimentary schools under the most arduous conditions. They did their best to care for the sick and injured and to feed the malnourished and starving. Not once did they waiver in the face of intimidation or death because they were sustained by deep religious and humanitarian convictions. This exceptional couple and their extraordinary life of dedication in some of the most isolated areas of Africa is an inspiration for all. They, indeed, spoke up for those who could not speak for themselves. --Adelino SERRAS PIRES and Fiona Claire CAPSTICK
