In an effort to introduce readers to some of the most beautiful of the million-and-a-half acres of Arizona wilderness, and to help insure the safety and comfort of the visitor, Mazel describes trails in nine separate wilderness areas. Grouped into five regions, each proposed venture includes the length of the hike; the elevation gain; the overall difficulty; the recommended season for a trip; where water is available; any pertinent notes (for example, unusual fire hazard); a description of the route; and any special features. The treks vary from short~ easy one-day hikes to fifty-mile backpacking excursions. About half are within an hour drive of major cities. Good quality, current maps are included, but a wise hiker will want to consider purchasing individual area maps, especially of challenging, undeveloped routes. A guide book that is meant to be used, it will not be appreciated by armchair travelers. The information is concise and helpful for planning and navigating. It will be of particular interest to Arizona libraries and bookstores, especially those serving energetic college students and other athletic, outdoorsy, adventurous patrons. Libraries and bookstores in southern California, Nevada, and Utah may also want to consider, since the book includes a number of hikes in Grand Canyon National Park. -- From Independent Publisher
