The collection of arms and armor at the Wallace Collection is widely recognized as being one of the largest and most important in the world. Consisting of around 2,500 objects, it represents both European and Oriental arms and armor. The European part of the collection was acquired primarily by Sir Richard Wallace, mainly in 1871, from the collections of Sir Samuel Rush Meyrick—founding father of the serious study of arms and armor—and that of the comte de Nieuwerkerke, Director of the Louvre under the Emperor Napoleon III.

About the Author:
Award-winning reporter James Mann is the author of the "New York Times" bestseller "Rise of the Vulcans: The History of Bush's War Cabinet" and "The China Fantasy: How Our Leaders Explain Away Chinese Repression", among others.
Dr Tobias Capwell began his career in arms and armor at the Royal Armories, Leeds, and gained an MA and PhD in Medieval Studies at the Institute for Medieval Studies, University of Leeds. In 2003, Dr Capwell joined Glasgow Museums as Curator of Arms and Armor, and has since then produced numerous books and articles on aspects of the Glasgow collection, including a new edition of the 1924 catalogue of the R.L. Scott Collection and a new general guide to the collection, The Real Fighting Stuff: Arms and Armor at Glasgow Museums. In 2006, he took up his present role as Curator of Arms and Armor at the prestigious Wallace Collection in London, England.
