Einband leicht berieben. - For sixty-five years drawing has been an important part of Henry Moore's working life and has played a major role in his development as a sculptor. Many other masters of modern sculpture also produced drawings of great interest and quality- Rodin, Maillol, Brancusi, Epstein, Lipchitz, Giacometti, Gabo, Hepworth and Smith - yet none has left such a varied, comprehensive and revealing opus of drawings than has Henry Moore. This selection of drawings from the years 1979-83 I have called 'Reminiscences, and Continuing Themes'. I use the word reminiscences to describe those works in which Moore borrows sculptural ideas and themes from earlier drawings and reinterprets them in a new context. The themes which Moore continues to explore are, as one would expect, the reclining figure and mother and child, the two motifs which have dominated his sculpture and drawings since the 1920's. "The vital thing for an artist," Moore has written, "is to have a subject that allows him to try out all kinds of formal ideas . as Cezanne did in his 'Bathers' series. In my case the reclining figure [and Moore would probably add, the mother and child] provides chances of that sort. The subject matter is given."
