Synopsis: ''In 1975 the 150th anniversary of the opening of the first public railway in Britain was celebrated. Railways are therefore part of our national history and form one chapter in the study of industrial archaeology or of social history. Each of the unbuilt railways is given a separate chapter with a heading giving the name of the engineer who plotted the route, the date and length. Altogether sixty lines were proposed but not built as compared with twenty which were successful, although most of the latter were absorbed sooner or later. A map is shown to represent the spread of the railway system at the end of each decade from 1831 to 1890.''. Seller Inventory # ABE-1482327941032
