Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. Bill Tidy (illustrator). First Edition. There was a time when gravestones carried messages of protest. Even limericks. Certainly humour. Occasionally, a raised solitary middle finger (see page 94 for the opposite). 96 pages of humour from that dark place in the churchyard. (I especially liked the one for Jonathan Pease on page 15.) About half of the examples are from the British Isles, another half from the Eastern U.S. - I noticed one example from India. B/W drawings (cartoons) by Bill Tidy have added to the twisted humour. Cond : Paper wrapper is white with black lettering. Front cover graphic shows a funeral in progress while thosei nthe back read odd epitaphs from a former time. Back cover shows Tidy with an actual verbose grave marker. Light general wear -esp. at spine foot. Very lightly soiled. No names, marks, nor creases. Excellent reading copy or gift for a genealogist ! ! Quote (p. 03 of Introduction) : " In the churchyard of St. Andrew's, Ashburton, Devon, are two stones commemorating John Winsor, Sergemaker (d. 1772) and Miriam Adams `who for Forty four Years discharged the responsible duties of letter-Carrier to ._._._. ."
