Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. First impression of the true first edition. Cover illustration by Domhnall Thomson. Two-page preface by the poet, Ruaraigh MacThomas (Derick Thomson) written at Aberfeldy, May 1980 to the fore. ***In Gaelic and English dual facing-page parallel text. ***A large number of the translations in this book have not been published previously, and were made specifically for this edition. The great majority of the poems have translations, but a few "sound-poems" have not been translated from the Gaelic into English. ***Very good in black cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to spine. Pale grey front and rear free endpapers and pastedowns. Gift inscription in blue biro pen to front free endpaper. Corners of boards slightly bumped. Pages clean. Spine tight. ***In a very good colour illustrated dustwrapper that has not been price-clipped but, with two small gold stars covering the price [see scan]. Edges of dustwrapper slightly creased, faded and rubbed. Dustwrapper clean. ***224 mm x 140mm. xiv prelim pages plus 283 pages. ***'This volume contains most of the work from the poet's published collections - An Dealbh Briste (1951), Eadar Samhradh is Foghar (1967), An Rathad Cian (1970), The Far Road (1971) and Saorsa agus an Iolaire (1977) - together with much of his more recent work presented in the final section. The line-for-line English translations which accompany most of the poems will help a wider public to appreciate that here we have not only a Gaelic poet of very great distinction but also one of the best Scottish poets now writing: and that it is possible to write well and to consider major contemporary issues in a language which, though not so widely spoken or read as English, has still a powerful poetic tradition to which this work makes a rich and variously significant contribution. ---***Derick Thomson was born on the island of Lewis, in the Outer Hebrides, in 1921, the son of the Gaelic poet James Thomson, and he grew up speaking both Gaelic and English. ---***Founder and Editor of the Gaelic quarterly Gairm since 1952, he is a trustee and editorial director of Gairm Publications, the leading Gaelic publishers. He is the author of many academic works. --- He was a prizewinner in the Festival of Britain poetry competitions in 1951, and was awarded the Ossian Prize by the FVS Foundation, Hamburg, in 1974. --- He continues to write poetry, regarding this as the most exciting and rewarding of many activities.' (Quote from inside front and rear of dustwrapper blurb). ***First impression of the true first edition complete in its original dustwrapper. An extremely hard to find first edition title. ***Of interest to collectors of Gaelic poetry first editions and the poetry of Ruaraigh MacThomais (Derick Thomson). ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.***.
