The 16 papers in this volume come out of a symposium held in London in 1995. This meeting recognised the amount of work currently under way on Crete which focuses on Dark Age, Hellenistic and Roman societies. Interesting new work by participants on a number of small excavation and survey projects is presented. Some contributors confront wider questions: James Whitley's exploration of the `ethnicity' of Eteocretans in the Praisos area and Nicholas Coldstream's discussion of `nostalgic Knossians of the ninth century BC' are notable. Although the papers are presented without introduction, conclusion or discussions, the general message of the meeting seems to be that, especially in Hellenistic and Roman times, Crete lost the uniqueness it had enjoyed in the Bronze Age and became a typical, relatively prosperous province of a wider world order. The next Post-Minoan colloquium happens on 17th-19th September 1998.
