Fred Archer grew up on his father's farm in the Vale of Evesham in the 1920s, a time when the horse was supreme and shepherd, dairyman and carter were kings within their callings. With wit and warmth, he describes local characters, and documents of a forgotten rural life - the way an elevator pole was used to build a hayrick, how small boys were sent under cornricks to cut off with scissors hanging straws that mice could use as ladders, and how cottagers kept songbirds in cages. Well-known for his writings on country life, he recounts here his personal experiences of farming, his discovery of work on the land, of friendship and of sex. The scene he paints is the unprettified reality of life, as cruel as it can be beautiful.

This book is a charming memoir in the tradition of LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE. Archer grew up on a farm in the Vale of Evesham, in England. Much of his story tells of a lifestyle only recently set aside. This is a time when homemade tinctures were used because there were no modern antibiotics for humans or animals. A place where tools and clothes and kitchenware so lovingly remembered are now only available in antique shops. Brian Hewlett's delivery can only be described as slow and gentle and heavily accented. But once you grow accustomed to the difference between this and the usual consumer venture, you'll find that it feels appropriate to the material. A good choice as well for James Herriot fans.
