For this departure from his normal stamping ground of North, East and West Africa, Michael Tomkinson teams up with Norwegian business magnate Alf R. Bjercke. The globetrotting grand old man of Rotary International, the Worldwide Fund for Wildlife and Norway's Olympic committee, Bjercke has also been Tunisia's honorary consul-general in Oslo for over 25 years. He does justice to the Vikings, who are not dismissed as barbarians but depicted as accomplished town-planners and farmers, boatbuilders, craftsmen and jewellers of great skill. Contemporary place names and archaeological discoveries prove the significant legacy of these Scandinavian forbears. Tomkinson's editing of Bjercke's text, together with numerous photographs, puts our often patchy knowledge of Norway's past into balanced, and often jocular, perspective.
