Synopsis

For a company whose fleet was never large, the Donaldson Line had a varied and fascinating history. The founders, the Donaldson Brothers, took delivery of their first ship in 1858 and put her into the South American trade. When this failed to thrive, they found new opportunities in the U.K. to Canada trade. Over the years, Donaldson's have also developed services to both the East and West Coasts of the U.S.A. and have from time to time re-entered the South American trade, as well as operating emigrant ships for the British government. The story came to an end in 1967, when the company decided it could no longer compete in the then rapidly changing shipping industry, and went into voluntary liquidation. Compiled by an ex-Donaldson officer, this Society publication is as rich as the history of the Donaldson Line itself. Its 128 pages include a substantial narrative history of the company, details of its many and varied subsidiaries, 14 maps and diagrams, and numerous appendices covering incidents affecting the line's ships. A coloured frontispiece features a painting by J.K. Byass of the COLINA passing Belle Isle and there are two pages of flags and funnels in colour. Details and histories of over 100 ships are presented, together with 140 illustrations.
