Paperback. Condition: Mint. Brian Collings (illustrator). First Edition. ANDERTON FOR ORDERS. Memoirs of a Working Boatman in the Early 1950's Tom Foxon. Illustrated by Brian Collings. J. M. Pearson Associates, Burton Upon Trent. 1988 First edition ISBN 0907864473 152pp Illustrated Paperbacks. This copy is in mint unread condition in illustrated card covers as issued. This is the first book in Tom's Foxon's triliogy At the age of 17, Tom Foxon left an office job and ran away to the boats. This was in 1950 and young Tom was eager to experience life with the working boatmen who still plied England's waterways, from London to Liverpool and from the Humber to the Bristol Channel. He was lucky to have been able to enter the world of canal carrying when he did, as it has now vanished. The colour and economic contribution of the canals of the time can be judged from listing some of the cargoes Tom met ? not just the traditional coal, gravel, grain and timber, but also borax, bentonite, nuts and bolts, dustbins, matches, canned tomatoes, wheelbarrows and even dates for making HP sauce! He writes with the enthusiasm of a teenager and with the keen eye of a canal aficionado, what a combination! Ref CC6. Seller Inventory # 009755
