Book Description Soft cover. Condition: VG+. No Jacket. Photos, Documents (illustrator). 1st. Sub-titled "The Anatomy of an Anti-Environmental PR Campaign" is an "expose" of a controversial public relations campaign of the late 1990s, in which Government interests and PR worked to discredit environmental groups intent on protecting large areas of native forest on the West Coast of the South Island from exploitation. The logging company involved was a State-Owned enterprise and its PR connections were active in changing attitudes, which nationally largely opposed native forest felling. The book details and documents the various tactics adopted to bring this change about. Nicky Harger has written about controversial high level political issues in NZ in a number of hard-hitting books. His co-author in this "public interest" work is a prominant Australian environmemntal journalist. This copy a 1999 first edition. 286 pages including reading list, notes, index and glossary, b/w photos and document reproductions throughout, map etc, pictorial colour card covers VG+ with trace wear front edges, text block excellent, no inscriptions. Book Description Paperback. Condition: Good. 286 pages. Ex-libraryWhat can Americans concerned about the e nvironment learn about a campaign to promote clearcutting in New Zealand? This book offers a playbook for a PR effort that could t ake place anywhere -- and demonstrates the lengths logging firms and governments will go to get what they want. It's a blueprint f or an end run around democracy in New Zealand, in Europe, in the United States. Most of us have no way of knowing what goes on be hind the news: what isn't true, what we are not being told and wh o is pulling the strings. This book changes that. Using the examp le of environmental controversy -- in this case logging of West C oast native forests by the New Zealand state-owned Timberlands We st Coast -- Nicky Hager and Bob Burton have produced a remarkable expose of how governments and business interests can use public relations to manipulate political debate. The story that emerges, of unscrupulous PR tactics by the international PR firm Shandwic k and a casual policy of telling the public what is useful rather than what is true, serves as a warning and an example of the sam e forces at work in the United States. Using hundreds of pages o f internal PR documents that were leaked by insiders offended at what they saw happening, Secrets and Lies provides a unique windo w on how PR muscle can steamroll public opinion. We see Timberlan ds systematically attacking critics, arranging the creation of an 'independent' pro-logging community, group, cultivating allies i n academia, government and environmental groups, compromising the independence of politicians and journalists and much more -- all for the unworthy cause of keeping native forest logging going af ter most New Zealanders believed it should end.
