Reviews

While the authors clearly aim their efforts at both students and practitioners, this work's primary value is that of a text for library school courses on classification. Taking its structure and approach directly from the schedules themselves, the book does indeed analyze all aspects of classifying materials with Edition 20 of the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC). A brief historical background and bibliography plus exercises at the end of chapters reinforces its value to students. This is, overall, a very literal, straightforward interpretation of the classification process. No attention is given to the contexts in which classification is being done nor to the varied collections confronting catalogers. This work will give current practitioners no new insights into the classification process and may lead the general reader to view classification as a simple, mechanistic interpretation of rules and schedules.
