Trinidad and Tobago is a multi-racial, multicultural society. While much attention has been paid to the literature of the African, East Indian, and European elements of the society, little space has been accorded the Amerindian-inspired dimension of that literary heritage. The Narratives of Amerindians in Trinidad and Tobago; or, Becoming Trinbagonian brings together poems, dramas, and stories that have been inspired by the Amerindian presence/absence during the end of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Those experiences, an integral part of Trinidad and Tobago's literary landscape, need to be given the attention they deserve. Elma Reyes, an early scholar of Amerindian history, notes: The only 'roots' of this nation are those planted by the first nations, for all other aspects of our culture and survival systems are transplants, branches which were successfully 'budded' to the main tree which existed long before their [Europeans] arrival.

Review:
A lively and revealing collection of narratives that explores Trinidad and Tobago's indigenous roots and casts new light on the multiethnic origins of national identity. Those interested in the Caribbean's literary and cultural history will find this book to be of great use. --Katherine Grandjean, Assistant Professor of History at Wellesley College

Thanks to Selwyn Cudjoe's intimate knowledge of the history of Trinidad and Tobago, he provides the reader with a fascinating compendium of key documents on the narration of the Amerindian presence in Trinidad. There is much to be learned here, by both the novice and those with an advanced knowledge of the country. Professor Cudjoe has a keen eye for what is unique, central and foundational, coupled with great skill in bringing to light that which is little known at present. I would not want to begin, or continue, a study of the narrative history of Trinidad's Amerindians without the aid of this wonderful resource. In addition, this work is a testament to the efforts undertaken by Trinidadian scholars in deepening and broadening national self-knowledge, in redefining what Trinidadian means, and in revealing the deep roots of the nation. --Maximilian C. Forte, Professor, Sociology & Anthropology, Concordia University
