Kindergarten-Grade 3-- Tonia is a tree in trouble: she has stopped growing. Enter the friendly, elderly, female tree surgeon who announces that she needs a change. Tonia is apprehensive about the transition, but with encouragement from the New Age surgeon/shrink (" 'You're sick but I know you're not dim./ You know growth doesn't come from the outside./ Growth only comes from within' ") and her emphathetic Liggledy Bird friends, Tonia allows herself to be trucked off to a new hill. There she not only grows again, but changes colors, inspiring metamorphoses throughout the forest. And just in case you didn't get the message, you get Tonia's parting words: " 'Don't be frightened of change. . .Change is what helps you to grow.' " OK, OK, fine sentiment, but its relentless, unsubtle parade through the forced rhymes of this tree tale makes one reach for one's chainsaw. The language of the verse ranges wildly from the cute-cute to pop psych platitudes. The watercolor illustrations are attractive, both in their precise detail and bleeding washes. Their vivid colors and delicate lines visualize this fantasy forest, but can't change this tract into literature. --Nancy Palmer, The Little School, Bellevue, Wash.
