Reviews

Here are two books which deal with fundamentally different aspects of pregnancy. The double entendre in Expecting Change refers not to the physical changes, but the emotional ones. This insightful and understanding book traces such changes as those in family relationships, expectations in the workplace, and even with one's self image. It creates a useful psychological representation of the pregnant state, and includes the feelings of experienced mothers and expectant fathers. Stern does a great job on exploring the reasoning behind childbearing, concluding that "when it comes right down to it, the urge to have a baby isn't rational at all." Similarly divided into sections corresponding to pre-pregnancy, the three trimesters, and postpartum, Sloane's workbook mainly covers the physical side. The book's main attractions, aside from clear, concise writing, are its textbook style, layout of handsome graphics, big double-spaced print, handy checklists and worksheets, and especially fine presentation of fetal development. It succeeds admirably as an educational aid for parents-to-be. The brief chapters on emotions and sexuality, though, do not compete with the depth of Stern's work. Each book complements the other, and both are recommended for general collections. Kimberly Megginson, VA Medical Ctr. Lib., Bedford, Mass.
