Joseph Katz is the former Chief Executive Officer of Saltzman Enterprises, producers of the James Bond films in London. Living out a kind of nomadic odyssey, Mr. Katz spent time in France, Italy, Switzerland, Belgium, Japan and Africa, finally settling in the State of Israel. He was instrumental in the formation of the Kibbutz industries in Israel, and he served in the U.S. Merchant Marine.
"For some half a century, Yeiske (Joseph) Katz and his brother Menke kept up a remarkable correspondence that spanned not only all those turbulent years but the globe as well, a world in which the peripatetic Joseph wandered through in his own personal Diaspora while the poetic Menke stayed close to his hearth in New York City. Then in 1969 Menke traveled to London and presented Joseph with several boxes filled with most of the accumulated letters which Joseph had written to Menke. Several friends with whom Joseph had shared the letters insisted that they were noteworthy examples of the epistolary art and that they should be published; LETTERS TO MY BROTHER is the noteworthy result.
Menke Katz, who died in 1991, was a widely published poet, with much of his work having been translated and published in foreign editions; he was also for many years the Editor of BITTERROOT magazine. It is no coincidence then that he was able to recognize in his brother's letters an element of the poetic and the epic. Joseph, during his years of solitary travel, was often tormented by loneliness and depression; the exchange of letters was his lifeline. Many were written in those early and darkest hours of the morning and the soul, when the full sense of separation filled the small hotel rooms and flats like a cold fog; some of those letters read like suicide notes. But Joseph was at his literary best when he was describing the minutiae of his days; many of those letters read like one-actor plays.
LETTERS TO MY BROTHER is about the transcendence of time, place and the human condition by the mutual love and respect of two extraordinary brothers, chronicled herein with intelligence and insight." -- Jeff Rawlings, SMALL PRESS REVIEW
