The title poem of Shaw's third book of poems concerns an art restorer who must wipe away years of grime from a provincial post office's murals; like the restorer, the poet attempts to rub away the thin veneer of ennui and routine that clouds the features of small town characters so that he may display the complicated personalities and motivations underneath. Shaw excels at details, bringing each new scene--whether it be a Boy Scout practicing his knots for a badge or a library patron scrambling down the stacks 15 minutes before closing time--a clarity that makes it all immediately recognizable. In the best poems, he manages to combine urbanity with eloquence, finding unusual phrasing for otherwise common experiences. His strength lies primarily in his ability to observe prosaic situations and make them universal; pieces that depend on abstract images falter, and some of the rhymed ones seem forced. In all, a collection of gentle poems peopled by unforgettable, somehow familiar characters on the cusp of epiphany. Elizabeth Gunderson
