Synopsis

Watches and clocks are witnesses of mores, functional objects reflecting cultures and works of art indicating changes in decorative styles. This work sets forth the history of the watch, not only from the technical standpoint but also from the artistic perspective. It examines how watch decoration has kept pace with fluctuations in decorative style. The influence of new techniques, such as overenamel painting, is also taken into account. Of particular interest is the ongoing effect of technology on stylistic change. As science and invention transformed the inner works of watches, art followed suit by altering their outward forms.
