Sixteenth-century cartographers made beautiful sailing charts with colorful compass roses to indicate the principal winds, and a lodestone (often a fleur-de-lis motif) pointing north. They let their imaginations run free on these designs, and so can you when creating a Mariner's Compass quilt. Judy's students usually find that the sewing is much easier than they had envisioned, so don't let anyone frighten you away from this beautiful pattern. Judy shares stunning examples and projects, and gives 11 full-size patterns for traditional 16- or 32-point compasses, as well as designs based on the sparkling six-spoken wheels of Costa Rican carts and other dramatic off-center compasses.

Mariner's Compass expert Judy Mathieson is a certified quilt judge and lectures and conducts workshops throughout the U.S. and internationally. She has appeared twice on HGTV's Simply Quilts. Judy lives in Sebastopol, California.
