Synopsis

This index provides quick access to the contents of more than 200 collections and sets of orchestral excerpts and parts published from 1900 to 1991. Reviews

As they learn their repertory or prepare for auditions, orchestra musicians depend on excerpt books. These anthologies, either of whole works or movements or of particularly important or difficult passages, are selected by notable performers, often with their fingerings, bowings, phrasings, and other notations that inform the performance. This index covers several hundred twentieth-century excerpt books, which are cited in full, arranged under the name of the instrument, at the back of the book. The preceding index is arranged alphabetically under the names of approximately 300 composers and subdivided by works, with several thousand symphonic works, operas, and oratorios in all.

Analytical access to this literature has been largely by word of mouth, within the communities of performers on a particular instrument, as passed on among the students of particular teachers or schools. Since few potential users are interested in any instruments other than their own, this book is one that they would expect to go to a library to use. It belongs in the collections of academic institutions that support live performances of serious music and also in public libraries in cities with resident performers. Here its consultation will probably not be heavy, but those who do use it will be immensely grateful.
