Rolling Stone's brand of impressionistic journalism has been fairly steady over the 20 years of the magazine's existence. This omnibus features Hunter Thompson on local politics in Aspen, Colo., Tom Wolfe on fashion, Greil Marcus on Woodstock. Interviews with Bob Dylan, Sting, Mick Jagger, John Lennon, and pieces on Stevie Wonder, the Grateful Dead and Michael Jackson lift the art of fanzine writing to new heights. For reportage of great social significance, there are articles on Kent State, Charles Manson and the Karen Silkwood case. Among the 135 pictures are Richard Avedon's minimalist photos of politicians and Ralph Steadman's Watergate cartoons. This coffee-table album is for fans. BOMC and QPBC selections.

It's difficult to believe that 20 years have passed since Rolling Stone published its first issue. But here is RS editor Wenner's "impressionistic chronology" of the period, an anthology of the best the magazine has offered: articles on Charles Manson, Watergate, Karen Silkwood, and the Sex Pistols written by the likes of Hunter S. Thompson and Tom Wolfe; major interviews with Bob Dylan, Mick Jagger, John Lennon; along with 135 photos, by photographers including Annie Leibovitz.
