About the Author Cornelius Con Hogan and his young family moved to Vermont in early 1972 from central New Jersey where he had spent seven years of work in corrections, beginning as a Correction Officer. He spent another seven years in that work in Vermont as Deputy Commissioner and later as Commissioner of Corrections. He and his wife, Jeannette, and daughter, Ruth, along with Kathie and Bill Moulton, their farm partners, operate East Hill Farm Family Riding Center, which was established in 1976 in Plainfield, Vermont. The Hogans son, Neil, and his family also live on East Hill Farm. Over the years they became part of a remarkable neighborhood of self-sufficient people, many of whom had roots going back to a much earlier Vermont. In his professional work, Hogan was fortunate to have worked in five different administrations of four different governors of both parties, ending his government career as Secretary of Human Services under Governors Richard Snelling and Howard Dean. While he has slowed his pace somewhat, he is still a respected international consultant on children s well-being issues, working in far-flung places such as the U.K., the Netherlands, Australia, Chile, Ireland, Norway, and, most recently, Northern Ireland. Throughout his life in Vermont, Con and his family have enjoyed and savored the independence and character of everyday Vermonters and their leaders. Con is a co-author of At the Crossroads: The Future of Health Care in Vermont and Gridlock: The Unhealthy Politics of Health Care in Vermont. He is author of Outcomes: A Framework for Improved Well-Being.
