Artificial intelligence (AI) is an area of computer science that aims to develop computer-based technology that simulates elementary forms of human intelligence. This dictionary includes about 1300 terms with basic and advanced definitions that presuppose some knowledge of AI. Some entries are identified by such AI subdisciplines as expert systems or robotics; others deal with linguistics, engineering, psychology, and other AI-related disciplines. Twelve appendixes cover topics from mathematical symbols to a listing of AI researchers. Using self-contained definitions and longer entries that include cross-references and a bibliographical reference to an article or monograph, this work is a hybrid between a dictionary and encyclopedia but lacks the coherence of either format. A good introductory dictionary is the Facts on File Dictionary of Artificial Intelligence , edited by Raoul Smith (Facts on File, 1989), and a good encyclopedia is The Encyclopedia of Artificial Intelligence , edited by Stuart C. Shapiro (Wiley, 1987. 2 vols.). Large academic and public libraries may want to consider adding this title.
