On May 13, 1607, the Susan Constant, the Godspeed and the Discovery found a flat, marshy peninsula almost three miles long jutting into the James River. On May 14th, the first Englishmen set foot on land and began construction of James Fort. Thus would begin the first successful English colonization in the New World. Jamestown, Williamsburg and Yorktown, as author Van Hawkins writes, "remind one of the phoenix, that legendary bird which rose from its own ashes." Now one of the most historical places in America, it was only in the 20th century, with the magnificent reconstruction of Colonial Williamsburg, that the area has finally achieved full recognition. For the first time, a pictorial history chronicles the evolution of three of America's oldest settlements from the first landing to modern times.
