Tells the story of those people responsible for the creation and promotion of the Statue of Liberty, focusing on Auguste Bartholdi who conceived the idea of France's gift to the United States

Though there are about a dozen "Statue" titles on the market, this is one of the better available narrative accounts. It does not include as many illustrations as either James Bell's In Search of Liberty ( LJ 8/84), Christian Blanchet and Bertrand Dard's Statue of Liberty ( LJ 11/15/85), Mary Shapiro's Gateway to Liberty ( LJ 6/1/86), or Michael George's The Statue of Liberty (Abrams, 1985). This book and the earlier titles are all popular, lightly documented narratives. While the definitive history of the statue remains to be written, Spiering's work makes use of primary resources, especially the writings of Auguste Bartholdi, the Frenchman who designed the statue. One must wonder, however, how much is enough on the Statue of Liberty. Libraries will want to look carefully at the vast number of topical books. For public and academic libraries.
