Grade 4-6-- This exercise in amateur publishing serves as a reminder of the craftsmanship and creativity necessary to produce a readable book. Each character here can be adequately described with one adjective. The style is closer to the minutes of a board meeting than to the speech of characters having an adventure. The thin plots move slowly and seem designed only to provide adventures. The planet Reath is, as the spelling suggests, Earth renamed, and never comes to life as a place. The three books are illustrated on a par with the writing, and the pictures are neither captioned nor located near the appropriate text. Legend . . . , the first book, occurs in the present, belying its title. The good guys have their adventures while taking a wagon-load of smelly water to a city under siege, where it will be used for chemical warfare. Explorers . . . has the same folks in a swamp looking for more unusual water and encountering such dangers as human sacrifice and a dinosaurian monster. Invasion . . . tells of a nasty, slave-stealing army of mind readers who are defeated when the good guys learn an incomprehensible foreign language. Of all the flaws of this series, the style of writing stands out as the most acute. If these books can serve any purpose, it may be to demonstrate the importance of appropriate speech and lively description. --Carolyn Caywood, Virginia Beach Public Library
