The highly endorsed picture book If I Ran the Family was honored in 2002 to be the first title selected for the Prevent Child Abuse Book Bank, a project of Prevent Child Abuse MN, because this book works on several vital levels simultaneously to nurture children, parents and families:
- First, because the book is based on solid principles taught by Early Childhood Family educators and authorities on healthy families, it informs and enlightens parents, giving them new information and a new context from which to view their challenging parenting situation. And this new perspective is offered in a non-threatening way, via a story filled with everyday examples that both parents and kids can relate to.
- Told through the voice of a child, the book affirms and validates the children who hear it, many of whom have been living with major unmet needs for empathy and understanding, as their parents have been dealing with other life stresses and issues.
- More subtly, the voice of the child touches the inner child in the parent, who has an opportunity to reconnect with their own awareness of their feelings from childhood.
- This mutual experience of validation of the child and of the parent s inner child, combined with the physical experience of sharing the book through closeness and reading together, helps build a bridge of compassion and understanding that nurtures the relationship between parent and child.
