Reviews

Gr. 7-12. More than simply a consciousness-raising exploration of prejudice today, this is an activist's approach to promoting cultural diversity. Duvall is neither preachy nor strident, touching briefly on everything from theories about race and "speaking in stereotypes" to the current controversy over U.S. immigration. The book's organization is episodic at best, but the text brings to light important issues, and it's loaded with resources for young people to pursue. The thought-provoking questions found in the book's "Time Out" sections can be used by independent readers or as classroom discussion starters, and the anecdotal material, featuring young people who have experienced prejudice and are working singly or in groups to overcome it, will encourage YAs to act. Duvall's agenda is no secret, but she pursues it practically and with a deep sense of commitment. Stephanie Zvirin
